What is Juneteenth?
JuneteenthThe Emancipation Proclamation declared an end to slavery as of 1863. Emancipation didn’t come immediately, though. Word of the proclamation spread slowly. It did not reach those held in slavery in parts of Texas for more than two years.

Use this month’s lesson to learn more about the gradual ending of slavery and about Juneteenth, the holiday marking the day when freedom had finally spread throughout the land.
