In Service - Lent

Volume 3: Issue 2
February 2017

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 1st. As we prepare our hearts for our forty-day pilgrimage to the cross, we offer these words of reflection for our inward journey as well as our outward actions:

“The forty days of Lent symbolize the forty days that Jesus spent fasting and praying in the desert. But that number forty was, in turn, meant to remind us of the forty years that the Israelite’s journey from Egypt to the Promised Land, from bondage to liberation, an apt image of the Christian’s Lenten journey from Ash Wednesday to Easter.” Albert Holtz (Pilgrim Road: A Benedictine Journey through Lent, xii)

Jane Shaw in A Practical Christianity: Meditations for the Season of Lent (page 60) offers this perspective: “The spontaneous glimpse of the divine working in the world is always an unexpected delight, but it can be frustratingly fleeting if we are not intentional about seeking it. Especially during the season of Lent, with the energy of intention all around, how do we develop a way of life that enables us to be intentional about seeing the world as it is, shot through with God? How do we train ourselves to ‘see’ in a regular way the God of mystery, the unfathomable, the un-seeable, the Creator God?

The late Margaret Guenther’s voice invites us to a Holy Lent of pilgrimage, offering us tips for the journey, as we are Walking Home: From Eden to Emmaus. As we take our walk of faith this Lent, she reminds us to travel light, feel the earth beneath our feet, and go forward from the garden with our eyes toward Jerusalem.
