Challenger McNamara questions Van Haaften’s vote against property tax caps
MT.VERNON, Ind.—Republican state representative candidate Wendy McNamara took issue with Rep. Trent Van Haaften’s vote against property tax cap legislation on Monday, and questioned why he is opposed to putting the issue before a referendum in November.
"Protecting taxpayers is fundamental to strong, representative leadership. It is disturbing to hear that Trent Van Haaften voted against providing this basic protection," said McNamara. "What concerns me the most is that this action indicates that he is not interested hearing taxpayers’ opinions on the property tax cap legislation; otherwise, he would have allowed the issue to be put before a referendum."
McNamara also noted the potential positive effect the tax caps could have on economic development.
"By permanently capping property taxes, we position Indiana to attract new homeowners, and ultimately new businesses," McNamara said. "Seeing protection from excessive taxing could be the deciding factor for numerous individuals and companies looking to relocate to Southwestern Indiana. At the end of the day, property tax caps help position us as a viable, attractive community for more families and growing businesses, and that’s what our community needs."
